Holiday Cottages on the Mawddach Estuary.
Bontddu is a quiet village on the north shore of the Mawddach Estuary, inside Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. It sits between the seaside town of Barmouth and the market town of Dolgellau, with Cadair Idris rising across the water. Whether you come to cycle, walk, paddle or simply sit and watch the tide, the estuary is one of the most beautiful corners of North Wales, and the perfect base for a family or dog-friendly holiday.
The Mawddach Trail.
The Mawddach Trail follows an old railway line along the estuary between Dolgellau and Barmouth. It is flat and traffic-free, so it suits walkers, families with buggies and cyclists of every age. Join it near Penmaenpool, stop at a riverside bench for a picnic, and look out for wading birds on the salt marshes.
Dogs are welcome on the trail, making it an easy daily walk from Tegfryn.
Barmouth Bridge & Beach.
Walk or cycle across Barmouth Bridge, the historic wooden railway viaduct that spans the mouth of the estuary, for some of the best views in Wales. On the other side, Barmouth has a long sandy beach, a busy harbour, independent cafés, ice cream and traditional fish and chips.
Barmouth is around a 10-minute drive from Bontddu.
Woodland Walks & Cadair Idris.
Footpaths climb from the estuary into old oak woodland, past streams and waterfalls, with views back across the water. For a bigger day out, the paths up Cadair Idris start just across the estuary, and the Precipice Walk above Dolgellau offers sweeping views with far less effort.
Return to a log fire, muddy boots by the door and a well-earned rest.

Coed y Brenin & Dolgellau.

Peaceful Picnic Spots.
Some of the best moments on the estuary are the quiet ones. Pack a picnic, find a bench beneath the pines, and watch the light change over the water and the mountains. Even in summer, you can find a peaceful spot all to yourself.
